Our core technology is called 4D Vision, which is built around proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies that control robotic pose estimation and path planning, and object recognition.

4D Vision is run through robotic workcells using Apera Vue vision software. Vue is robot-agnostic and compatible with many of the leading robot brands. Apera Vue is suitable for bin picking, assembly, packaging and sorting applications.

The difference in performance versus existing vision systems is measurable in a lower total vision cycle time as low as 0.3 seconds (3 Hz). This performance metric includes the ability to handle objects with shapes and finishes previously considered “impossible,” such as clear, shiny or highly similar objects. These operations occur under ambient light and without the significant investment in cameras, lighting, sensors and fixtures needed by other systems.

Robotic machine tending using AI-powered vision

Machine tending a CNC or laser marker with a robot makes a lot of sense—it can produce parts 24/7 and frees up your operators to supervise multiple machines or do higher-value work. Using a vision system with your robot eliminates the need for special fixtures to hold parts before and after machining. Your cell can produce a greater variety of parts and shorten changeover times by simply loading a different vision program.

Bin picking, kitting and sorting of bolts with an Epson industrial robot—multiple object finishes

This application uses an epson robots industrial robot for bin picking and placement of various bolts, including shiny objects. This is a difficult vision application because of the precision of the placement, different object finishes and the dimensions of the objects being picked from the bin. These capabilities could be used for an application like kitting parts carts for an automotive assembly line.
